South Hook Noise Group Noise Ratings from recent Vessel visits

A revised version of the South Hook Noise Group Noise rating system in which we rate noise emanating from vessels based on a collaborative assessment from locations suffering noise issues from locations within South Pembrokeshire. The new system rates both the distance in which residential properties are affected by noise emanating from the vessel at berth with a range-o-meter rating, and shows the impact of the noise with an impact-o-meter rating.

The recent visit of the Daewoo Q-Max vessel, 'Lijmiliya' on the 18th-19th April caused noise issues for local residents once more, on its eight visit to South Hook, resulting in a number of residents along the Milford Haven waterway registering complaints to the Pembrokeshire County Council Port Health Team.

This followed the second visit of the 'Excelerate' Conventional LNG carrier, owned by Excelerate Energy, which discharged its cargo without any cause for concern from local residents for the first time, following an LNG leak on its first visit to the terminal. This visit was for a swift 21 hours, following the first visit where the vessel was at berth for 60 hours, leaking cargo over the deck of the vessel which required repairs in a shipyard in Cadiz, Spain.

There is a responsibility of the master of the vessel to inform the port authority - and on first occasion it did not happen and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency only became aware of this event after.

We are now awaiting the visit of the sister vessel of the 'Lijmiliya', the Daewoo Q-Max vessel 'Al Samriya' to visit on the 25th April. The 'Al Samriya' has similar noise issues, registering eight on the South Hook Noise Ratings during its last visit.

While the South Hook Terminal continues to receive cargos from vessels which they are aware cause noise issues for local residents, ships which have been upgraded with improved diesel generator exhaust system silencers as stated in the South Hook Press Release in July 2010, continue to visit other terminals. Two of the vessels in question, the Q-Max vessel 'Bu Samra' is currently at berth in the Isle of Grain Terminal in London, and the Q-Flex vessel 'Tembek' has delivered cargo to Nagoya in Japan. The last time this vessel delivered cargo to the South Hook Terminal was in July 2010.
